MJM ward rounds 09/09/05

Interesting task of choosing 10 drugs, 5 antibiotics & 5 others that you would take in your 'doctor's bag' to a disaster area. I chose mine considering we have to be prepared for such calamities as floods, fire, storm, landslides, earthquakes, drought, chemicals etc. A major problem in these situations would be the overcrowding and poor sanitation. My considerations were for respiratory tract infections, diarrhoeal diseases, wounds, burns etc. My choice of antibiotics were amoxycillin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and metronidazole. I ran out of choices after this. My choice of other drugs were oxygen, normal saline, paracetamol (safest analgesic + antipyretic) and morphine for more severe pains. Again I ran out of choices here. I searched through the internet through many websites and finally hit upon the American Red Cross site which had a section for disaster & preparedness. Infact there are 'disaster kits' available for sale. From the contents of the kit I chose to take activated charcoal as my fifth 'other' drug.

It was an interesting discussion on friday (see Dr. McMahon's blog http://wardround.blogspot.com) following which I have chosen to swap amox for co-amoxiclav, gent for clindamicin and add quinine. Dr. jones mentioned the ease of administering buprinorphine (sublingual) as compared to morphine and I decided to ditch morphine. Interesting excersise, also made me more aware of some anti microbials.
